The Evolution and Structure of Sustainability Science, SFI Working Papers
Excerpt: The concepts of sustainable development have experienced extraordinary success since their advent in the 1980s. They are now an integral part of the agenda of governments and corporations and their goals have become central to the mission of research laboratories and universities worldwide. However, it remains unclear how far the field has progressed as a scientific discipline, especially given its ambitious agenda of integrating theory, applied science and policy, making it relevant for development globally and generating a new interdisciplinary synthesis across fields as diverse as ecology, the social sciences and engineering. Abstract: Indirect reciprocity is one of the mechanisms for cooperation, and seems to be of particular interest for the evolution of human societies. A large part is based on assessing reputations and acting accordingly. This paper gives a brief overview of different assessment rules for indirect reciprocity, and studies them by using evolutionary game dynamics. Even the simplest binary assessment rules lead to complex outcomes and require considerable cognitive abilities.

Excerpt: In some countries, including the United States and Japan, people who have trained at great length and expense to be researchers confront a dwindling number of academic jobs, and an industrial sector unable to take up the slack. Supply has outstripped demand and, although few PhD holders end up unemployed, it is not clear that spending years securing this high-level qualification is worth it for a job as, for example, a high-school teacher.

A Single Historical Continuum, Cliodynamics
Excerpt: In the middle of the twentieth century our understanding of the past underwent a quiet revolution whose full implications have yet to be integrated into modern historical scholarship. At the heart of the revolution were new chronometric techniques, new ways of dating past events. For the first time, these techniques allowed the construction of reliable chronologies extending back before the first written documents, before even the appearance of the first humans, back to the early days of our planet and even to the birth of the Universe as a whole. This expanded timeline provided the foundation for the âSingle Historical Continuumâ of my title. This paper describes the chronometric revolution and the creation of a single historical continuum. It then discusses some of the implications of these changes for our understanding of âhistory.â (...)

Information storage and transfer in the synchronization process in locally-connected networks, SSCI 2011
Excerpt: Synchrony is a phenomenon where a group of weakly interacting oscillators demonstrate the ability of mutual entrainment, organizing themselves to reach a highly ordered state. The study of synchrony has been hindered by the inherent nature of complex systems requiring the system be studied at a global level. To create new insights here, we use information-theoretical techniques to view the synchronization process as a distributed computation, and to measure the information storage and transfer at each node in the system at each time step. These application-independent measures provide results that can be compared to other systems, and also study the local dynamics of synchronization within the system. (...)

Excerpt: Network structure may be especially relevant to the study of cooperation, because the action of mechanisms which affect the cost:benefit ratio of cooperating (e.g. reciprocity, punishment, image scoring) is likely to be mediated by the relative position of actor and recipient in the network. Social proximity could thus affect cooperation in a similar manner to biological relatedness.
Self-organizing traffic lights at multiple-street intersections, arXiv
Summary: Traffic light coordination is a complex problem. In this paper, we extend previous work on an abstract model of city traffic to allow for multiple street intersections. We test a self-organizing method in our model, showing that it is close to theoretical optima and superior to a traditional method of traffic light coordination.

Excerpts: Recently, several complex network approaches to time series analysis have been developed and applied to study a wide range of model systems as well as real-world data (...) In this paper we demonstrate that the well known graph theoretical properties local clustering coefficient and global (network) transitivity can meaningfully be exploited to define two new local and two new global measures of dimension in phase space: local upper and lower clustering dimension as well as global upper and lower transitivity dimension. (...) Our results demonstrate that Ï”-recurrence networks exhibit an important link between dynamical systems and graph theory.
Emergent Criticality Through Adaptive Information Processing in Boolean Networks, arXiv
Excerpt: We study information processing in populations of Boolean networks with evolving connectivity and systematically explore the interplay between the learning capability, robustness, the network topology, and the task complexity. We solve a long-standing open question and find computationally that, for large system sizes $N$, adaptive information processing drives the networks to a critical connectivity $K_{c}=2$. For finite size networks, the connectivity approaches the critical value with a power-law of the system size $N$. (...)
Evolved structure of language shows lineage-specific trends in word-order universals, Nature
Excerpt: First, contrary to the generative account of parameter setting, we show that the evolution of only a few word-order features of languages are strongly correlated. Second, contrary to the Greenbergian generalizations, we show that most observed functional dependencies between traits are lineage-specific rather than universal tendencies. These findings support the view thatâ"at least with respect to word orderâ"cultural evolution is the primary factor that determines linguistic structure, with the current state of a linguistic system shaping and constraining future states.

Excerpt: This paper develops a dynamical price and quantity adjustment process for a fully decentralized market economy, and shows for the first time, using agent-based modeling techniques, that in the long-run, prices and quantities approximate their equilibrium states. Evidence of Strategic Periodicities in Collective Conflict Dynamics, SFI Working Papers
Excerpt: We analyze the timescales of conflict decision-making in a primate society. We present evidence for multiple, periodic timescales associated with social decision-making and behavioral patterns. We demonstrate the existence of periodicities that are not directly coupled to environmental cycles or known ultraridian mechanisms. Among specific biological and socially-defined demographic classes, periodicities span timescales between hours and days, and many are not driven by exogenous or internal regularities. Our results indicate that they are instead driven by strategic responses to social interaction patterns (...)
The Emergence of Homogeneous Norms in Heterogeneous Populations, SFI Working Papers
Abstract: Social norms are known to establish social order and cohesion if actors commonly agree on them. In heterogeneous populations, however, normative conflict may result and social order may collapse. In this article, we show by means of a computational simulation model that homogeneous social norms may even come about in heterogeneous societies consisting of groups with competing interests. We demonstrate that punishment oriented at conformity can set off enforcement cascades leading to one generally accepted norm. In our model, agents put pressure on others to perform the same public behavior as they show themselves, even if they privately disapprove it. Interestingly, this type of punishment is more effective to form norms than pressuring others to meet their own private preferences. We conclude that group pressure and punishment may be interrelated phenomena, which can lead to homogeneous behaviors even in well diversified societies.
Polyethism in a colony of artificial ants, arXiv
Abstract: We explore self-organizing strategies for role assignment in a foraging task carried out by a colony of artificial agents. Our strategies are inspired by various mechanisms of division of labor (polyethism) observed in eusocial insects like ants, termites, or bees. Specifically we instantiate models of caste polyethism and age or temporal polyethism to evaluated the benefits to foraging in a dynamic environment. Our experiment is directly related to the exploration/exploitation trade of in machine learning.
Ravens Reconcile after Aggressive Conflicts with Valuable Partners, PLoS ONE
Excerpt: Here, we demonstrate the occurrence of reconciliation in a group of captive subadult ravens (Corvus corax) and show that it is more likely to occur after conflicts between partners who share a valuable relationship. Furthermore, former opponents were less likely to engage in renewed aggression following reconciliation, suggesting that reconciliation repairs damage caused to their relationship by the preceding conflict.
Statistical physics approach to graphical games: local and global interactions, Eur. Phys. J. B
Abstract: In a graphical game agents play with their neighbors on a graph to achieve an appropriate state of equilibrium. Here relevant problems are characterizing the equilibrium set and discovering efficient algorithms to find such an equilibrium (solution). We consider a representation of games that extends over graphical games to deal conveniently with both local a global interactions and use the cavity method of statistical physics to study the geometrical structure of the equilibria space. The method also provides a distributive and local algorithm to find an equilibrium. For simplicity we consider only pure Nash equilibria but the methods can as well be extended to deal with (approximated) mixed Nash equilirbia.
The contribution of statistical physics to evolutionary biology, arXiv
Abstract: Evolutionary biology shares many concepts with statistical physics: both deal with populations, whether of molecules or organisms, and both seek to simplify evolution in very many dimensions. Often, methodologies have undergone parallel and independent development, as with stochastic methods in population genetics. We discuss aspects of population genetics that have embraced methods from physics: amongst others, non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, travelling waves, and Monte-Carlo methods have been used to study polygenic evolution, rates of adaptation, and range expansions. These applications indicate that evolutionary biology can further benefit from interactions with other areas of statistical physics, for example, by following the distribution of paths taken by a population through time.
